We are excited to begin our 2021-2022 Parent Book Club meetings on October 5! Each month, we will come together to discuss The Self-Driven Child, a book that provides tools to help parents support their children as they learn to navigate life with confidence.

In The Self-Driven Child, authors William Stixrud and Ned Johnson focus on the ways children today are being denied a sense of controlling their own lives—doing what they find meaningful and succeeding or failing on their own. The authors note screen time is part of the problem, but also identify well-meaning parents and schools who unintentionally take away opportunities children need to grow stronger and more confident. Utilizing data, theory, and case studies, Stixrud and Johnson suggest parents and educators adopt the role of consultant rather than manager, helping children take more responsibility for their own decisions.

Evidence shows age-appropriate autonomy is vital for young people’s mental health, helping them to develop brains that are resilient, resourceful, and ready to take on new challenges. We will come together to talk about the book recommendations and the real-life applications.

The club will meet the first Tuesday of the month with in-person meetings from 11:00 am-noon and via Zoom from 5:00-6:00 pm. The dates and readings for our meetings are:

  • October 5: Introduction, Chapters 1 & 2
  • November 2: Chapters 3-5
  • December 7: Chapters 6 & 7
  • January 4: Chapters 8 & 9
  • February 1: Chapters 10 & 11
  • March 1: Chapters 12-14

After a brief introduction and overview, we will break into small groups. Each month, we will send out a registration link so we can plan for our break-out groups for each session. Please be sure to register for whichever session—morning or evening—that works best for your schedule that month. The Zoom link will be emailed to those registered for the 5:00 pm meeting.

We look forward to seeing you and sharing ideas on how we can better understand and support your sons and daughters during this time in their lives!
