BASKETBALL
The Villa basketball program opened their season last week with three games in three days in the round robin Metro League Tournament. Players adjusted to the new normal of 2020--no fans and playing in masks but just happy to be playing! In a hard-fought loss to MICDS in game one, Isabel Behr led the team in rebounds. In game two, the Saints settled in a bit more and worked hard on jelling as a team but couldn't overcome Lutheran South. Ryan Harper, Karie Adamitis, Paige Jackson, and Isabel Behr led in scoring, and Paige Jackson and Karie Adamitis led in assists. Wednesday's game three was GAME ON! Villa strung together a few consecutive scoring runs and learned a new defense, which turned into some turnovers that led to points. However, the Saints couldn't earn enough points and suffered a grueling loss to Westminster. Ryan Harper led in scoring.
On Friday, Villa faced a tough Francis Howell North team. Though they played hard and never stopped fighting, the Saints fell to the Knights. Maiya Smith and Paige Jackson led the Saints in scoring, and Isabel Behr also contributed. Madison Burkot played very well with transition defense, and Alice Irvin, Olivia Gehm, and Grace Hanson all played great over-all defense. Maiya Smith did a great job of handling the ball under the pressure from the Knights. Moriah Moore, Paige Jackson, and Ryan Harper all contributed during fast break opportunities, and Ella Robson made a tremendous give and go play where she ended up getting fouled and shooting free throws.
SWIMMING AND DIVING
The swimming and diving team has been training very hard the past four weeks and is anxious to start competitions. The team will open their season today at Westminster at 4 pm in a tri-meet with Westminster and Nerinx.
