SWIMMING AND DIVING
Villa divers Annie Fox and Caroline Schneithorst trained hard post regular season for the State meet and that hard work paid off. They set out with two goals in mind for the State meet, make finals and improve their score from last year, and they accomplished those goals! Annie who placed 10th last year with a score of 330.80 moved up to 9th place this year with a score of 345.15. Caroline who placed 20th last year with a score of 221 jumped up to 13th place this year with a score of 339.35, barely missing 12th place by .65 points and 11th place by 1.2 points.
The Saint's Swim & Dive team continued the trend of rewriting the history books with another incredible performance at the Class 1 State Championships. The team placed 12th out of 61 qualified teams, and scored 91 points between both swimming & diving. Representing Villa at the State Championships were Liza Brown, Annie Fox, Carly Fesler, Kate Fesler, Hattie McNulty, Caroline Roderick, Katherine Roderick, Caroline Schneithorst, Madelyn Schoedel, and Zoe Schoen.
Day 1 Prelims The preliminaries for swimming consist of 32 athletes competing for 16 spots in the finals, across eight individual events, and three relay events consisting of the same format.
Villa had three swimmers competing individually, Caroline Roderick (100 Free & 100 Backstroke), Carly Fesler (50 Free), and Madelyn Schoedel (50 Free & 100 Free). In the 50 Free, Carly placed 17th with a season's best 25.72, and Madelyn placed seventh in a time of 24.9, which qualified her for the championship heat in finals. In the 100 Free, Caroline placed 18th with a season's best 56.13 and Madelyn qualified for the consolation heat placing 13th, in a time of 55.28. In the 100 Backstroke, Caroline placed 20th with a time of 1:03.30 (this event took place 5 minutes after Caroline competed in the 200 Free Relay).
In the relays, the 200 Medley team made up of Caroline Roderick, Liza Brown, Carly Fesler, and Madelyn Schoedel got the team off to a strong start by breaking the school record in a time of 1:54.57. The time qualified in eighth place, taking the final spot in the championship heat.
The 200 Free relay heading into the meet was ranked 12th overall. The team of Madelyn Schoedel, Caroline Roderick, Hattie McNulty, and Carly Fesler took the entire meet by surprise and moved up to third place in a time of 1:42.47, dropping a total of 2.79 seconds from their entry time. This performance qualified them for the championship heat and put them in contention for a state title!
The 400 Free relay team of Katherine Roderick, Kate Fesler, Liza Brown, and Carly Fesler put together a strong performance placing 21st overall. Highlighting the relay was Katherine Roderick's leadoff split, as she got under the 1-minute barrier for the first time!
Day 2 Finals The 200 Medley relay of Caroline Roderick, Liza Brown, Carly Fesler, and Madelyn Schoedel held their podium spot for eighth place and each member earned a medal for their achievement.
Madelyn Schoedel placed seventh in the 50 Free to medal, making her the youngest swimmer since Morgan Mullenix in 2008-2009 to accomplish such a feat. In the 100 Free, Madelyn held her spot of 13th place to help add more points to the team's total.
The last event to cap of the State Championships was the 200 Free relay, and the girls stuck with the theme of shocking the meet. After their massive time drop in prelims, they dropped another 1.46 seconds from their time and ended up winning the event outright! The race was extremely close the entire way and Villa ended up touching out Westminster by three-hundreths of a second. This accomplishment was the first relay title in school history. Congratulations Madelyn Schoedel, Caroline Roderick, Hattie McNulty, and Carly Fesler!
BASKETBALL
Varsity came out firing on all cylinders in their the last few games against Whitfield, Cor Jesu, Clayton, and Visitation. The Saints were battling and exchanging baskets, but the other teams proved to be too much and Villa could not land a win. At last night's game against Visitation, seniors Maria Adamitis, Alexandra Dalaviras, Maggie Ignaczak, Katie Rodriques, and Paige Schneider were celebrated. In addition, the Villa Dance Team performed and honored their senior member, Danae Clayton.
The JV basketball team had a busy, successful week. The Saints started off by defeating Whitfield on Wednesday 31-23, with Ava Gueck, Allison Smith, and Mairin Schweppe each scoring six points. On Thursday, Villa played Cor Jesu but despite a great team defensive effort, the girls didn't have enough offensive power to best the Chargers. On Saturday, the team faced Clayton, and with an outstanding offensive burst from Trish Moore, the Saints defeated the Greyhounds 37-16. Last night, the girls faced Visitation and did not disappoint the home fans. With a great team effort and scoring from multiple girls, the Saints defeated the Vivettes 33-21. Our scoring has been across the board including Ava Gueck, Allison Smith, Mairin Schweppe, Sophie Walbrandt, Maiya Smith, Ryan Harper, and Trish Moore. Megan Korte has excelled defensively, leading the team in blocks and offensive rebounds.
