Oak Hill Nuts and Bolts | February 13, 2020
Greetings! Valentine's Day brings with it a flurry of activity with gifts, cards, and candy (so, so much candy!). It is important for us to reflect upon the great love that is present in our lives as well.
A Prayer for Resting in God's Love I thank you that there is no human experience that I might walk through where your love cannot reach me. If I climb the highest mountain you are there and yet if I find myself in the darkest valley of my life, you are there. Teach me today to love you more. Help me to rest in that love that asks nothing more than the simple trusting heart of a child. Amen.
- Author Unknown Blessings, Dr. Peter M. Schroeder
NO SCHOOL | FEBRUARY 14 & 17
Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School will be closed tomorrow, February 14, and Monday, February 17, for the Presidents' Day weekend.
PARENTS GOING OUT OF TOWN?
When parents are to be out of town, they should notify Oak Hill Office at 314.810.3434 so that the School will know whom to contact in case of emergency. In the event of an illness or injury, if the School is unable to reach a parent and a designated guardian for the student is not on file, the School cannot release the student to another individual or permit the student to leave school.
DADS' HAPPY HOUR
The Parent Association invites all dads for a Dads' Happy Hour from 5:30 to 7:30 pm Wednesday, February 19, at the MAC West for drinks and appetizers in the 1903 Bar. YEARBOOK SPONSORSHIPS
The Yearbook staff is giving our families the opportunity to honor students with sponsorships in the 2019-20 Oak Hill Yearbook. Parents may choose to buy a sponsorship space to congratulate a special award (i.e. speech, science fair, the arts, or sports), commemorate First Communion, or to just say they are proud of their Sacred Heart student. Flyers with more information will be sent home this week or download a copy below. You may create and pay for your sponsorship online. The deadline is February 28, so mark your calendar. Contact Lisa Carswell, Yearbook Advisor, at lcarswell@vdoh.org if you have questions.
SEE YOU AT THE RACES
The gates open at 6:30 pm Friday, February 21, in Kenefick Gym for A Night at the Races. Spend an evening "betting" and cheering on six horse races that are broadcast "live" on a jumbo screen. Come enter a derby hat contest, sip on mint juleps, and purchase raffle tickets for a chance at some fantastic items and experiences. Gather your friends, family, neighbors...all are welcome! Registration deadline is Tuesday, February 18, and proceeds benefit the Villa Duchesne-City House Alumnae Association and the Sr. Mary Gray McNally Alumnae Scholarship. This event is for guests 21 or older. In the event of inclement weather, purchases are non-refundable and the event will be rescheduled. Contact Rachel Drone Gehm '88, Manager of Alumni Relations, at rgehm@vdoh.org or 314.810.3420 if you have any questions. See you at the starting gate!
MURAL DONATIONS NEEDED
The fifth-grade art classes are still seeking donations for a mural they will be creating from recycled plastics. Our parents can help by sending in clean plastic, jar or bottle lids (the more color the better), old toothbrushes (Mr. Thurm will chop off the brush, so we will just use the handles), and bits of plastic toys small enough to fit in a child's hand (like a Lego, a plastic toy car, a tiny plastic doll, etc.). We prefer these be broken/unusable toys to avoid waste. A box marked "Recycled Mural Project" will be available in the Oak Hill entrance for items to be dropped off.
WEDNESDAY MORNING MASS
Please join us at 7:15 am Wednesday, February 19, for Mass, Father Donald Henke presiding. Mass is celebrated most Wednesdays at 7:15 am in our Chapel when school is in session. Everyone in our school community is invited and encouraged to attend.
SPIRITUALITY SERIES
Please join us for the final presentation in our 2019-2020 Sacred Heart Spirituality Speakers Series, The Mission Continues. On Friday, March 6, Frances Gimber, RSCJ will present "On to New Frontiers: the Mission Spreads." Sr. Gimber will discuss how the Society moved beyond Europe and the Americas after the dramatic event of 1818, Philippine Duchesne's voyage to America and her mission endeavors in the New World, and thus, the beginnings of the internationality of the Society. Gather for goƻter at 9:30 am in the Parlor Dining Room with the presentation from 9:45-11:15 am in the Lenke Global Education Center.
LENTEN MORNING OF REFLECTION
The Mothers' Lenten Morning of Reflection, sponsored by the Mission Committee of the Parent Association and inspired by Goals I, II, and IV, offers a morning of prayer, presentation, and light continental breakfast from 8 to 10 am Wednesday, March 11, in the Lenke Global Education Center. Selections of Bishop Robert Barron's series on The Mass will be shown, followed by the praying of the Stations of the Cross. Contact Polly Capps or DeAnn Gueck for more information at vdohmission@vdoh.org. All are welcome to join the celebration of Mass beforehand at 7:15 am in the Chapel.
