Varsity soccer defeats St. Charles West. Photos courtesy of Dave Mack. SOCCER In a battle of two of the state's top 10 ranked teams, Varsity soccer (5th) faced St. Charles West (8th) on the road and came away with an exciting 2-1 double-overtime win. Allison Smith put the Saints up early in the first half after converting a beautiful header after a corner from Katie Rodrigues. Unfortunately, the Warriors answered in the second half to force overtime. With two minutes remaining in the second extra time, Ally Bowers found Katie Rodrigues for the game winner. This also marked the first time the Saints were shutout in 18 games. Junior Varsity kicked off a three-away-game stretch last Monday against the Borgia Knights. The Saints had several great scoring chances but ultimately lost to the Knights 5-0. On Thursday, the JV team traveled to St. Charles West and played a well-fought game that resulted in a 0-0 tie. Mid-fielder Arden Duffy played exceptionally well, feeding great balls into the attacking third. Goalkeeper Izzy Kohlberg made several fantastic saves to keep the Saints' shutout. Finally, the JV took the field again to face the Ladue Rams on Saturday. Once again, the team played well but fell short 2-0. Head coach Gabby Menendez commented, "My girls played several great games this week, but unfortunately, they didn't get the results to show it. I've been so impressed with their willingness to learn and improve throughout the season. I anticipate that next week will be even better than the last."
