Villa Duchesne Nuts and Bolts | February 28, 2019

Image
Happy snow day! It is hard to believe that the end of the third quarter of school is a week from Friday. While we still have the fourth quarter of school and a variety of school activities, your daughters are looking to next year and their academic courses.

I am pleased to be able to announce the addition of five new courses to the Villa Duchesne program offerings. We are adding three new math courses—AP Calculus BC, Statistics, and FST (Functions, Statistics, and Trigonometry). We will also be offering a high school computer science course with a focus on coding and programming. The fifth new course is Digital Photography, a semester long art course. Please contact me if you have any questions about these courses or the course selection process.

GOOD NEWS | JEANS 4 TEENS

As part of her Service Learning, sophomore Ally Bowers has launched a project that can help make a difference in the lives of foster kids and their families in the St. Louis area—"Jeans 4 Teens (and youth)." The ReFresh Boutique, run by the Foster and Adoptive Care Coalition, has a need for gently worn jeans for kids in grades K-12. The boutique's profits allow the FACC to support families and children in foster care across the St. Louis area, and the boutique offers deep discounts to children in foster care. A win-win situation! Ally's "Jeans 4 Teens" drive will run March 4-29 with collections spots for gently worn jeans at both Villa and Oak Hill. Your small donation can make a huge impact in the life of the foster youth in need!

GLOBAL STUDIES SUMMER SEMINAR | NEW YORK

The Global Studies: New York seminar gives students entering their sophomore year the chance to explore the concept of globalization by travelling to New York City to explore the international history, culture, and economics of this great metropolis. They will also learn skills helpful in their sophomore World Civilizations II course. Class dates are May 28-29 and June 3-5, 2019; travel dates are May 30-June 1, 2019.

The seminar is limited to 12 students and registrations are due by Friday, March 15, with payment due by Sunday, April 28. A student's tuition must be current to register for school trips.

SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING

Even with enrollment in full swing, we still recognize the power behind your voice when promoting Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School to the outside world. Please be sure that you "share" our posts on Facebook and Twitter! We want everyone to hear about all the great things we are doing. This will go far to spread our Sacred Heart Strong message. Bar none, the very best way to market a school is through parent and family networks. You are the authentic voice promoting our school to the outside world. You have family and friends (and they have family and friends, etc.) that may not have heard about all the great things we are doing here!

FIRST FRIDAY MASS & EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

Tomorrow, March 1, Oak Hill will celebrate First Friday Mass at 8:15 am followed by Benediction and exposition of the Eucharist until 3 pm. All are welcome to join the Oak Hill students for Mass or to visit anytime during the day to spend time in prayer and adoration with Our Lord.

While students, faculty, and staff will make visits throughout the day, parent volunteers are needed to ensure that the exposed Blessed Sacrament is never left unattended. For more information about serving, please contact Kelly Adamitis at kellyjadamitis@icloud.com.

SPIRITUALITY SERIES

The final lecture in our 2018-19 Philippine Bicentennial Sacred Heart Spirituality Speaker Series is entitled "Philippine Duchesne: Her Legacy and Call to Us Today" and will be presented by Maureen Glavin, RSCJ from 9:30 to 11:15 am tomorrow, March 1. Sr. Glavin will use Philippine's life and example as a springboard into an exploration of our own lives and calls. She will examine what we have learned from Philippine and how we are invited to be Christ's Heart in our world today. Coffee and goûter will be available in the Parlor Dining Room at 9:30 am. The presentation will be held in the Global Education Center. Please join us!

ASH WEDNESDAY OBSERVATIONS | MARCH 6

Ash Wednesday is the day on which we usher in the liturgical season of Lent. It is not a Holy Day of Obligation for Catholics but it is a day of prayer, fasting, and repentance. On Wednesday, March 6, Oak Hill students will celebrate Mass at 8:15 am and Villa Duchesne students will celebrate at 2:15 pm in our Chapel. All members of our community are welcome to join our students at either or both of these celebrations. There will not be a 7:15 am Mass on March 6.

WEDNESDAY MORNING MASS

Due to Ash Wednesday services, a 7:15 am Mass will not be held in our Chapel on March 6. Please join us for our next Wednesday morning Mass on March 13, when we will pray for people who are crucified by unjust societies. Mass begins promptly at 7:15 am in the Chapel and usually concludes no later than 7:35 am. Mass is celebrated most Wednesdays at 7:15 am in our Chapel when school is in session. Everyone in our school community is invited and encouraged to attend. View our 2018-2019 Mass Intentions list to see the specific intentions planned for each week.

ROSARY

All are welcome at 8 am each Wednesday when school is in session in our Chapel to offer the Rosary to Mater for her motherly protection of our children and for all the faculty, staff, and religious of this community who play such a critical role in nurturing and teaching our children.
