Oak Hill Nuts and Bolts | January 31, 2019

Image

A piece of Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School's drive for excellence in all things is a real focus on a strong and rigorous educational program that is nimble and able to inspire the minds of all our learners. One of the ways we are accomplishing this is by the addition of Science Specialist Kristin Stratman who is helping elevate the current Oak Hill science program and create dynamic science experiences for students JK3-grade 6.

We are proud to announce that by early next week, each class will have had at least one active and authentic learning experience in the science lab with Mrs. Stratman. Proud to be living out our deep respect for intellectual values (Goal Two)!

Blessings,

Dr. Peter M. Schroeder

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK REVISED SCHEDULE

Happy Catholic Schools' Week! At our Monday morning assembly, I framed this week with the thought that we are both a community of faith and a community of learners. Both our profound love for God and others and our deep respect for intellect and learning are to be celebrated!

While the unexpected day off yesterday did make it necessary to adapt our schedule of events, I felt it was important to still host the CSW picnic so the students would not be disappointed and the provisions already prepared would not be wasted. As I noted in my email to families yesterday, the picnic will be from 11 to 11:30 am tomorrow, February 1, with "Drop Everything and Read" taking place from 10:40 to 11 am. Since I know not everyone's schedule might allow them to attend on this alternate day, my hope is that as the year progresses we can schedule another family event similar to the picnic to join both the school and the family communities together.

GOOD NEWS

Congratulations to Grace Kraeger, the Oak Hill School Spelling Bee Champion, and to Jessica Schultz, the runner-up! REENROLLMENT CONTRACTS

By Friday, February 1, parents will be sent electronically the Enrollment and Tuition Contracts for the 2019-2020 school year. We are hopeful that by sending these electronically it will make the process of reenrolling a bit easier for you. We ask that you read and complete an Enrollment and Tuition Contract for each child returning to VDOH and submit them by Friday, February 22, 2019. The enrollment deposit of $1,000 should be mailed to the Business Office. If you have any questions regarding this process, please contact Director of Enrollment Management Therese Hagemeister at thagemeister@vdoh.org or 314.810.3446.

OAK HILL YEARBOOK SPONSORSHIPS

The yearbook staff is offering families the opportunity to honor students with sponsorships in the 2018-19 Oak Hill Yearbook. Parents may choose to buy a sponsorship space to celebrate a special award, like speech, science fair, the arts, or sports; commemorate First Communion; or just to say they are proud of their Sacred Heart student. You may create and pay for your sponsorship online, and the deadline is Friday, February 22. Informational flyers will be sent home with students this weeks or tap the link below for a downloadable PDF. Contact Lisa Carswell, Yearbook Advisor, at lcarswell@vdoh.org if you have questions.

AN EVENING OF ONE ACTS

The Villa Duchesne Performing Arts Department will present An Evening of One Acts from 7 to 8:30 pm tonight, January 31, and Friday, February 1, in the Auditorium. Admission is $3 for VDOH students, $5 for general public, and is payable at the door.

An Evening of One Acts is student-directed and this year, for the first time, student-produced by senior Ava Niemi, who is also directing Lin-Manuel Miranda's short musical, 21 Chump Street. Clare Daiber is writer/director of 1953, set in the famous Delmonico's Restaurant in New York. Puberty, the Game Show, dealing with the indignities of adolescence in a funny way, is directed by Micalah Harris and Meaghan Findley. And, Gianna Vacca directs The Millennials, a one-act dealing with the agonies of college selection and acceptance.

The production is appropriate for audiences grade 7 and up.

The next First Friday book drive for the St. Louis Catholic Academy in North St. Louis will be tomorrow, February 1. FIRST FRIDAY MASS & EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

Tomorrow, February 1, Oak Hill will celebrate First Friday Mass at 8:15 am followed by Benediction and exposition of the Eucharist until 3 pm. All are welcome to join the Oak Hill students for Mass or to visit anytime during the day to spend time in prayer and adoration with Our Lord.

While students, faculty, and staff will make visits throughout the day, parent volunteers are needed to ensure that the exposed Blessed Sacrament is never left unattended. For more information about serving, please contact Kelly Adamitis at kellyjadamitis@icloud.com.

SPIRITUALITY SERIES

The next lecture in our 2018-19 Philippine Bicentennial Sacred Heart Spirituality Speaker Series is entitled "Following Philippine to Frontiers Crossed – Now What?" and will be presented by Lyn Osiek, RSCJ from 9:30 to 11:15 am tomorrow, February 1. Sr. Osiek will discuss what we have learned during the celebration of the Bicentennial of the Society's arrival in North America and how that can carry us forward. Coffee and goûter will be available in the Parlor Dining Room at 9:30 am. The presentation will be held in the Global Education Center. Please join us!

WEDNESDAY MORNING MASS

On Wednesday, February 6 we will pray for evangelizers. Mass begins promptly at 7:15 am in the Chapel and usually concludes no later than 7:35 am. Mass is celebrated most Wednesdays at 7:15 am in our Chapel when school is in session. Everyone in our school community is invited and encouraged to attend. View our 2018-2019 Mass Intentions list to see the specific intentions planned for each week.

PRAYER INTENTIONS

Do you have a special intention or a loved one that you would like to be included in our Oak Hill Mass petitions? Please send an email to Katie Maxwell, Campus Minister, at kmaxwell@vdoh.org. We would very much like to remember the intentions of those in our community as we celebrate Mass together.
