Oak Hill Nuts and Bolts | October 11, 2018

Image

In last week's Nuts and Bolts, I shared this riddle that I presented to the students: How do you know when the dark of night has turned into the light of day?

With Goal IV in mind, building community, the answer is this: when the grace of God is burning so brightly in your life that there is enough "light" to look at those around you and see them as brother or sister. Jesus commands us in the Gospel to love one another as He has loved us. If we love one another and show kindness, we will bring each other out of darkness and into the light of day.

Blessings,

Dr. Peter M. Schroeder

OAK HILL ELECTS STUCO OFFICERS

Congratulations to Grace Kraeger, Thomas Kraeger, and Wynn O'Keefe who were recently elected Oak Hill STUCO officers for 2018-19. All of the candidates running for STUCO did a great job preparing and presenting their speeches. We are so proud of each of them!

We will also be looking for two representatives from each homeroom, so there are still opportunities for student leadership.

First grade students performed Math Man for parents and fellow students Wednesday afternoon. Math Man, which presented the concepts of time, fractions, calendars, and money, is an original production by Caroline Zarinelli. Mrs. Zarinelli oversees Oak Hill's performing arts program.

Remember, the State of the School meeting is from 6 to 7 pm tonight, October 11. Head of School Michael F. Baber as well as board members and staff will speak. BONNE CHANCE AUCTION

The early-bird deadline for reservations is tomorrow, October 12. Register now to receive the discounted reservation price. Reservations are accepted online or by returning the response card included with your invitation.

Raffle tickets are rapidly selling! Remember, only 300 tickets will be sold for a chance to win $10,000. You need not be present at the auction on November 10 to win. A day off of school will be awarded to students on Monday, January 7, if all 300 tickets are sold by the end of October.

In addition, auction volunteers will collect bottles for this year's Wine Pull each Wednesday during dismissal leading up to the Auction. Wine donations may also be made at the Portry of the 1929 Main Building. Contact the auction office at vdohauction@vdoh.org or 314.810.3550 if you have questions or want to volunteer.

PICTURE MAKE-UP DAY | OCTOBER 16

Picture make-up day is scheduled for Tuesday morning, October 16. Make-up day is for all students who did not have their photos taken in August. All students should be in complete uniform when having their photo taken.

ANTICIPATED FEAST OF MATER ADMIRABILIS | OCTOBER 19

Next week we will celebrate the feast day of Mater Admirabilis. Girls should be in dress cardigans and boys should wear long pants with boys in grades 3-6 wearing their blue blazers. As in the past, we encourage our students to wear pink accessories with their school uniforms in honor of Mater Admirabilis. Girls may wear pink ribbons and socks. Boys may also wear pink socks. New this year, all Oak Hill students may wear pink shirts with their pants, jumpers, or skirts. As stated in the Student-Parent Handbook, students are required to wear the winter uniform (no shorts) beginning on this feast day, continuing through spring break. Blazers and cardigans are required for all winter Masses.

We encourage all of you to join us for this beautiful Mass at 8:15 am Friday, October 19, in the Chapel.

Students in Dr. Erickson's Intro to Engineering course shared their hand-made pop-up books with Oak Hill JK & K students. While the Villa students were learning the mechanics of principles that allow a large object to be compacted and later re-expanded--like a large telescope being sent into space, the Oak Hill students enjoyed the stories told.

FALL MUSICAL

Join us to celebrate the 150th publication anniversary of Little Women as the Villa Duchesne Performing Arts Department presents Little Women, the Musical. Never out of print and translated into more than 50 languages, Little Women is a beloved classic. The musical adaptation is true to the spirit of Louisa May Alcott's novel, transporting us to the world of the March family: their struggles and successes, romances and heartbreaks.

Performances begin at 7 pm Thursday, October 18, through Saturday, October 20. Tickets are available at the door prior to each performance or online below. All ticket sales are general admission seating--Adults $12, Students $5, Children 6 and under are free.

WEDNESDAY MORNING MASS

On Wednesday, October 17, we will pray for churches in the Middle East. Mass begins promptly at 7:15 am in the Chapel and usually concludes no later than 7:35 am. Mass is celebrated most Wednesdays at 7:15 am in our Chapel when school is in session. Everyone in our school community is invited and encouraged to attend. View our 2018-2019 Mass Intentions list to see the specific intentions planned for each week.

PRAYER INTENTIONS

Do you have a special intention or a loved one that you would like to be included in our Oak Hill Mass petitions? Please send an email to Katie Maxwell, Campus Minister, at kmaxwell@vdoh.org. We would very much like to remember the intentions of those in our community as we celebrate Mass together.

ROSARY | EACH WEDNESDAY

All are welcome at 8 am each Wednesday when school is in session in our Chapel to offer the Rosary to Mater for her motherly protection of our children and for all the faculty, staff, and religious of this community who play such a critical role in nurturing and teaching our children.
