Varsity won their first game of the week over Ursuline by a score of 8-0. Goals were scored by Milam Anthon, Brooke Behan, Suzy Keefer, Harriett Hudspeth (2), and Taryn Tkachuk (3). On Saturday, after JV White and JV Maroon shutout the Angels, Varsity followed up with a big 6-0 shutout win over St. Joe. The school spirit and superhero theme were amazing as all three of our teams swept St. Joe on a beautiful Saturday at Villa! Varsity goals were scored by Harriett Hudspeth (2), Suzy Keefer (2), and Liz Pelligreen (2). The entire defense including Hope Washburn, Claire Douglass, Anna Pelligreen, Julia Hagan, Ellie Crimmins, Hannah Touchette, Arden Duffy, Maria Adamitis, and Garner Hostnik played stellar in the shutout victories! Varsity is back in action on Wednesday at Nerinx and then heads to Chicago on Friday morning for the Huskie Invitational.
The JV Maroon team also had two great wins this week defeating Ursuline by a score of 8-0 on Thursday and a great win over St. Joe on Saturday. In an epic battle between teams, Villa JV Maroon came away victorious with a 2-0 win over the Angels with goals scored by Grace Billhartz and Zoe Schoen. The cheering and support by everyone were awesome. JV Maroon plays Nerinx Wednesday following Varsity.
The JV White team started the day off with an impressive 2-0 victory over St. Joe Saturday! The team fought hard and came away with a 2-0 shutout victory over the Angels. Goals for JV White were scored by Lilly George and Kaki Dolan and Valeria Rivera earned the shutout. JV White played with amazing teamwork and positivity on the field. JV White finishes their season out this week with games on Tuesday at Nerinx and Thursday at John Burroughs vs Lindbergh. Superhero fans flood Condie Field on Saturday. VOLLEYBALL
Last Tuesday, all three teams played at St Francis Borgia for a non-conference away match. The C and JV teams played hard but came up short in straight sets. The Varsity team played outstanding against a tough Borgia team. The defense on both sides of the net was solid with Ashley Federer, Sarah Mclain and Mackenzie Robinson combining for 31 digs and Megan Korte putting away seven kills for the match.
On Thursday evening, the Varsity team started play in the 20 Team Gateway Matchup Tournament at Oakville High School. After dropping a close match to state contender Lutheran South 25-20, 25-19, they rebounded to beat Lindbergh 25-23, 25-21. They then followed with Washington dropping the match in straight sets after a heartbreaking loss in set two at 28-26. The last match of the night was Parkway West and the Saints mustered up a split with the Longhorns by taking set two 25-18. Thursdays matches were a series of ups and downs but along the way the team found consistency and a fighting attitude that would carry over to Saturday's tournament matches. On Saturday, the Varsity team started the day with a scrappy Timberland team dropping the match only to wait in the wings for a revenge match against Nerinx Hall later that morning. The Markers took a conference match off the Varsity squad a few weeks prior but this time it was all Saints as they beat Nerinx 25-22, 25-16. After the win, they got their chance to do the same against Ursuline. The Bears and Saints went back and forth for more than an hour with a match that was a true look at how the ladies can fight and show resilience when the score is tight. The Saints took the first set 27-25 in a defensive showdown like no other. The Bears rebounded by winning set two and three 30-28, 28-26 but the match itself was no doubt a turning point for the Varsity team this season. During the tournament, McKenna Kruse dished out assist after assist while Molly Donovan and Megan Korte led the way at the net. Nothing hit the floor as Ashley Federer, Sarah McLain, MacKenzie Robinson, and Mattilee Frechmann put in consistent defensive efforts.
This past week, the JV team ran into a buzzsaw their first set at Borgia 3-25, but rebounded with a respectable 14-25 comeback against a very formidable team. Due to missing players, a depleted team went to their final tournament and finished second in their opening pool, having defeated Principia 25-19, 25-14, but losing to host Orchard Farm, 25-9, 25-18. They finished fourth overall in a tough three-set match, falling to Affton 17-25, 25-13, 15-11.
On Tuesday, C Volleyball traveled to Borgia for their second away match of the season. Although they lost in two sets, they played well as a team and never gave up.
TENNIS
Varsity tennis had a busy week with three away matches. The Saints claimed a 5-4 victory over Ladue but suffered defeats by both St. Joe and Burroughs. After being down 7-4, Elizabeth Burns and Emily Thomas came back in their doubles match to win.
The JV team also had a full week playing three matches against Ladue, St. Joe, and Cor Jesu. Though the team is gaining confidence and building skills, they could not overcome their opponents. The JV Saints will finish out their season after four matches this week.
The C team lost to Principia's JV team on Friday. The doubles team of Betsy Benzinger and Harper Bealke fought hard and earned the Saint's sole win in the match.
GOLF
The Saints JV golf team excelled last week at Riverside Golf Course taking third place out of 13 schools in the 9-hole division. Kate Decker, who shot a 56 on the par 35 layout, led the team and placed 11th individually. Emily Yn and Briahna Klein supported the effort with each shooting 59. On Tuesday, Varsity lost a very close match to Westminster 165-167. Emma Buell tied for match medalist with a 33. The JV team easily won their match with a score of 185. Following a rainout on Wednesday, Varsity finished their match competition for the season Thursday with a resounding victory over Notre Dame, 181-217. Emma Buell was medalist with a 39 and Natalie Telscher was runner-up with a 44 on the par 36 Quail Creek Golf Club. Next week the Saints travel to New Bloomfield, Missouri to compete in the Capital City Invitational.
