Oak Hill Nuts and Bolts | September 20, 2018

Image

I feel like we are settling into the rhythm of the school year, and I want to express my deepest appreciation for the welcome I have received upon my return to Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School. It is a tremendous blessing to have the opportunity to return to Oak Hill and work towards educational excellence with the students and faculty and in partnership with you, the parents. Thank you for "joining the journey" with us this year.

As a source of reflection, I want to share a piece that I used in a conversation with a student this week that was written by Jan Dunn, RSCJ in Life at the Sacred Heart (1985).
"The intention of Sacred Heart education is to address the whole person. You come as you are and are cared for with great love. The hope is to implant in you a sacred love for yourself, to challenge you to be more honest, to lead you along the road of integrity.
Through growth in self-discipline, you will learn how to accept the consequences of your choices and actions. At times you will have to refuse yourself what you like; at other times you will have to act independently of what others think or say of you; in all your actions become free to live face to face with yourself under the eyes of God."

Thanks to all who attended our Math in Focus parent meeting on Tuesday. The responses I heard were positive, and I feel like it was a great way to strengthen the bonds of partnership between school and home. If you were not able to make it, the recorded presentation can be viewed on Facebook and copies of the handout are available in the Oak Hill Office.

Blessings,

Dr. Peter M. Schroeder

PEACE DAY MARCH

Please note that our Peace Day March scheduled for tomorrow, September 21, will begin earlier than originally announced. Please join us in Condie Hall at 8:45 am if you wish to attend. The prayer service should conclude by 9:55 am. Parking will be available in the lots near Condie Field.

GLOBAL SERVICE DAY

Merci Beacoup to all who made our 2018 Global Service Day a success, to those who planned activities, contributed blessing bag items, donated blood, and the approximately 200 students, parents, faculty, staff, and alums who volunteered on campus and around St. Louis on Saturday. We were able to fill nearly 300 blessing bags and had an additional 20 grocery bags of extra supplies. We exceeded our goal for the blood drive collecting 36 units. And, we have clearer paths for individuals enjoying our Natural Wildlife Habitat.

UPDATES FOR EMERGENCY NOTIFICATIONS

We ask each family to verify their home, work, and mobile phone numbers for emergencies like snow days. Under the Bulletin Board on your Parent Portal, expand the MyBackPack window and tap the 'Update Profile' link to get started. Your user name and password will be required to access your profile.

If information needs to be updated, select "Edit" in the upper-right corner of the page to make changes. Be sure to select "Save" as you go and "Done" when you have made all of your changes. If you add a new mobile number or have not received prior text messages from us, you may opt-in by simply texting "yes" to 67587. You will receive an almost immediate system response if you have successfully opted-in.
Please update your phone numbers by Wednesday, September 26, as we will be testing our emergency broadcast system on September 27.

STUDENT SAFETY

As we continue the school year, please make note of these student safety reminders. Because of the amount of traffic flowing around campus, it is important to drop off your children at the sidewalk in front of the Duchesne building, not in front of the pods. This will ensure that they can safely exit your vehicle and properly come under our care and supervision. On late start Tuesdays, all students arriving before 8:45 am should be dropped off at Acorn Club on the lower campus. No student should be dropped off on the upper campus to walk down by themselves. As we share the roads with other families and many new drivers, please also be sure to drive with caution and follow the designated carpool traffic patterns. If you have questions related to the Drop-Off procedure, please refer to the Student-Parent Handbook available in the Resource Center of the Parent Portal.

GAME DAY ETIQUETTE

Help us protect our playing fields. Animals are not allowed on any athletic field during athletic contests, including pre- and post-game activities, not only for the safety of participants but also to maintain the integrity of the field. In particular, animals should not be on Condie Field at any time. Please make sure all pets on campus are kept on a leash and remain outside the gated perimeter of the fields.

WEDNESDAY MORNING MASS

On Wednesday, September 26, we will pray for physicians. Mass begins promptly at 7:15 am in the Chapel and usually concludes no later than 7:35 am. Mass is celebrated most Wednesdays at 7:15 am in our Chapel when school is in session. Everyone in our school community is invited and encouraged to attend. View our 2018-2019 Mass Intentions list to see the specific intentions planned for each week.

ROSARY | EACH WEDNESDAY

All are welcome at 8 am each Wednesday when school is in session in our Chapel to offer the Rosary to Mater for her motherly protection of our children and for all the faculty, staff, and religious of this community who play such a critical role in nurturing and teaching our children.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

Our community offers opportunities to spend time before the Blessed Sacrament in our beautiful Chapel following Oak Hill's First Friday Masses. Oak Hill's next First Friday Mass will be held October 5. While students, faculty, and staff will make visits throughout the day, parent volunteers are needed from 9 am to 3 pm to ensure that the exposed Blessed Sacrament is never left unattended. For more information about serving, please contact Kelly Adamitis at kellyjadamitis@icloud.com.
