Mathematics

The philosophy of the mathematics department at Villa Duchesne is based on the primary idea that mathematics is learned best when learned with meaning. Therefore, a conceptual and investigative approach guides lesson planning, classroom discourse, and assessment. Learning is supported with graphing calculators and computer software that allow students to make connections between different representations of mathematical ideas and increase critical-thinking ability. Classroom conversations create environments where the personal growth of one student enhances the growth of another. Teachers continuously adapt the learning experience to meet the needs of a variety of learning styles and abilities.

A graduate of Villa Duchesne has engaged in a rigorous college-preparatory curriculum. She appreciates how mathematics is linked to all academic disciplines. The power of mathematics as a logical system and language of the physical universe is evident to her. Her active participation in developing skills and concepts promotes a confidence in her abilities to use mathematics in her future endeavors.

"In geology, we did a lab in subduction. (That’s when tectonic plates meet with one sliding under the other!) We had two graham crackers and we put vanilla icing on one and chocolate icing on the other. Then we put a whole bunch of candy on the vanilla one and had to scrape it along the chocolate one to show the different levels of the seaboard."
