  Spanish Course Descriptions

FLG72 - Spanish 7         1 year

The students begin a formal study of Spanish.  Stress is given to oral as well as written skills.  Basic grammatical structures are presented and students begin to read short passages.  They are also introduced to the culture of Spanish speaking countries. 
    
FLG82 - Spanish 8         1 year

The student builds upon the skills acquired in Grade 7. Listening, reading, writing, and speaking are all integral to the program. Basic grammatical knowledge is enlarged so that students complete material equivalent to the first year of Spanish at the high school level.  The study of Spanish culture is continued. 
    
FLG111 - Spanish I (9-12)        1 year
                      1 credit
The main goal of this course is to reach the entry-level student by presenting material in an active, flexible and meaningful manner.  Vocabulary and basic grammatical structures are taught and practiced.  At this level, it is vital to communicate the cultural diversity of Spanish speaking countries, so that students develop appreciation and understanding of varied Hispanic cultures. 

FLG211 - Spanish II (9-12)        1 year
                   1 credit
(Prerequisite:  Successful completion of Spanish I or successful completion of Spanish in grade 8 with a grade of B  and teacher recommendation)
    
Material covered in Spanish I is reviewed and the four basic language skills are further developed. Whereas Spanish I emphasizes listening, repetition and basic self expression,  students in Spanish II deal with more complex structures, both  in spoken and written forms.  Class is conducted in Spanish.
    
FLG311 - Spanish III (10-12)        1 year
Prerequisite:  Spanish II and current teacher recommendation)                 1 credit

(Students review in depth the material presented in Spanish I and II and complete the study of most major grammatical concepts.  More emphasis is placed on reading comprehension, beginning conversation and free composition.  Class is conducted in Spanish.
    
FLG411 - Honors Spanish IV (11-12)      1 year
(Prerequisite:  Spanish III and current teacher recommendation)           1 credit
    
Spanish IV H includes a comprehensive review of all aspects of Spanish grammar and an introduction to authentic texts and Hispanic cultural themes.  At the end of the course, students should be able to understand and communicate effectively with native speakers of Spanish in writing and speaking.  Tapes of native speakers are used to develop listening and speaking skills and literary and cultural readings form the basis for classroom discussion and written work. Classes are conducted in Spanish.  This course may be taken for Advanced College credit through St. Louis University's 1-8-1-8 program.

FLG511   Spanish V: Advanced Placement Spanish Language (12)  1 year
(Prerequisite:  Spanish IV H and current teacher recommendation)           1 credit
                                              
Spanish V is an Advanced Placement Course in Spanish Language which, together with Spanish IV, prepares students to take the Advanced Placement Spanish Language Examination.  Students will further develop writing, listening and reading skills through the study of various cultural, literary and historical texts.  This course especially trains students to express themselves coherently, fluently and accurately using the two active language skills - speaking and writing.  Different genres of literature are studied, and newspaper articles, films, newscasts and web sites allow students to explore Hispanic societies past and present. Classes are conducted in  Spanish.  Students so desiring may also elect to take this course for Advanced College Credit through the Saint Louis University 1-8-1-8 Program.
