This newsletter is the final issue of College Corner for the semester. We wish you a happy, healthy summer!

 

Villa Duchesne Summer Programs for Rising Juniors and Seniors

Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School's Passport to Summer program offers a variety of camps and workshops, including three college prep programs that would be of particular interest to upperclassmen. Passport to Summer is open to any student, regardless of whether they attend Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School. Register today!

ACT Prep Workshop – June 1-11, 9 am-12 pm  Grades 11-12 – Cost $399

This two-week workshop, which begins this Monday, takes place before the June 13 ACT and is offered by The Princeton Review. Workshops will run daily from 9 am-12 pm. Practice tests will be held from 9 am-1 pm on Monday, June 1, Friday, June 5, and Wednesday, June 10.

College Application Essay Workshop – Grades 11-12

Session 1 – June 8-10, 9 am-2 pm – $180 (lunch included)
Session 2 – August 5-7, 1-4:30 pm – $180 

The June 8-10 workshop will help students prepare for the college application process. From letters of recommendation and essays, to the application itself, this workshop will teach students the skills they need to apply to college. Explanations of the process of interviewing, obtaining recommendations, and crafting an activities list will also be included.

The August 5-7 writing workshop will focus specifically on how to write an effective college application essay. In addition to examining the strategies useful in composing an insightful personal essay and brainstorming ideas, students will write and revise at least two essays.

Both workshops are open to students entering their junior or senior year, but priority will be given to seniors.

This workshop is for the Class of 2016 and will help students complete the Common Application, which is used by more than 500 colleges and universities for their undergraduate admissions process. Students need only attend one of the four sessions offered. The workshop is complimentary, but registration is required.

Northwestern University Information Session

Exploring Educational Excellence Information Session

The Exploring Educational Excellence Information Session is presented by Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Rice University, and the University of Chicago. Students and their parents will learn more about the selective admissions process, scholarships and financial aid, academic programs, and campus life. An admissions officer from each school will be available to answer university-specific questions. University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine

Campus Visit Days: The University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine will welcome visitors on Friday, June 12. Campus Visit Days will begin on the UMKC Volker Campus with a presentation and tour. Students and families will then travel to the Hospital Hill Campus to interact with School of Medicine students and staff and participate in hands-on activities related to medicine. Washington University College Kick Start

Rising sophomores and juniors are invited to attend Washington University’s Kick Start Program, where they will gain insights into planning for college. Students will learn about academic programs and explore extracurricular activities and life on campus. Program dates are Tuesday, June 23, or Thursday, July 30. Both programs are scheduled from 7:45 am to noon on Washington University's Danforth Campus. There is no cost to attend. Students can register online at https://kickstart.wustl.edu.


Washington University Summer Visit Days

Allegheny College Creek Connections

This summer experience is for students entering their sophomore or junior year who are interested in studying environmental science in college and love the great outdoors. Students will practice hands-on, field-based research, work alongside environmental science professionals, and visit outdoor locations around the French Creek watershed, one of the most biodiverse watersheds in the nation.

Broadreach

Broadreach offers global education and skill-building summer adventures for middle school, high school, and college students. The program is a collaboration for international education and hands-on learning. New England Center for Investigative Reporting

The Investigative Journalism Workshop is based at Boston University’s College of Communication. The three two-week sessions take place June 29-July 10July 13-24, and July 27-August 7. During each session, students will participate in seminars and work with Boston University faculty and award-winning local and national journalists on investigative stories that could be published on the Center’s website or in regional or national publications. New York Film Academy Summer Camps

New York Film Academy’s film and acting summer camps are for high school students ages 14-17. The camps are hands-on, intensive programs focusing on filmmaking, acting for film, music video, digital photography, screenwriting, video game design, 3D animation, musical theatre, and broadcast journalism. New York University Summer Program

Oxbridge Academic Summer Study Programs

The three Oxbridge student programs for 2015 include:

Oxbridge St. Andrews (grades 10-12): June 14-July 11. This program takes place at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. This four-week program enables students to choose any two courses, one as a major and one as a minor. 

Oxbridge UCLA (grades 10-12): June 22-July 17. This program takes place at the University of California, Los Angeles. This four-week program enables students to choose any two courses, one as a major and one as a minor. 

Oxford One-Week Seminar (grades 10-12): August 2-9.  This is an intense, week-long session that enables small groups of students to delve into the subjects they love.

Saint Louis University International Business Summer Academy

The International Business Summer Academy is a two-day program introducing high school juniors and seniors to an international business curriculum. Smith College Precollege Programs for High School Girls

University of Mississippi "Heads in the Game" Summer Program

The University of Mississippi Department of Electrical Engineering and Division of Outreach and Ole Miss Athletics are offering rising juniors and seniors an opportunity to participate in a new program researching STEM approaches to care and training for all college athletes.

Program dates are June 28-July 28. All fees for the program will be covered by a scholarship provided by X2 Biosystems. Students will work with the Center for Health and Sports Performance and gain college-level research methods; be trained in using X2 Biosystems’ innovative concussion detection software; be part of the Summer College for High Schools Students (SCHS) program and be housed in a residential college with other participants; and have the opportunity to participate in all extra-curricular activities with SCHS.

University of Tulsa Summer Camps

Annual TU Summer Jazz Camp – July 12-18 (students entering grade nine through college): This week-long camp is open to all music students (instrumental and vocal) with all levels of skill and experience. Washington University in St. Louis Summer Experience

The Summer Scholars Program is open to students entering their junior or senior year of high school. Enroll in two courses, choosing from foreign languages, math, science, humanities, and social studies, and earn up to seven units of transferable college credit. Westminster College Summer Programs

The Westminster Institute for National Security – July 19-22: WINS is an intensive, two-day, three-night experience on Westminster’s campus. The Westminster STEM Academy – June 14-18: Students will explore how physics, environmental science, mathematics, and chemistry impact daily life and the entire world. Wittenberg University President's Leadership Academy

The Wittenberg University President’s Leadership Academy for students entering grades 11 and 12 will take place June 21-25. Courses, workshops, and hands-on experience will help students learn to lead with confidence and develop critical knowledge necessary for success. Cost is $700 and includes food and accommodations. Scholarship Opportunities

June Deadlines

Odenza Vacations Scholarship – Students between the ages of 17 and 24 can apply for this scholarship by submitting an answer to the essay question, which can be found on the application page. Got a Spine Scholarship – This scholarship is available for current seniors who will be attending a college or university in the fall on a full-time basis. The application deadline is Tuesday, June 2. Application is available at http://www.studentscholarships.org/2015_college_scholarships.php.

Abbot and Fenner Scholarship Program – Applicants must write a 500-1000 word essay. The essay should describe your educational career and life goals, explain your plan for achieving your goals, include your degree/major, and how this scholarship would help you achieve your goals. Big Sun Scholarship – All student-athletes in their senior year of high school are eligible for this scholarship. The application includes an essay of 500-1000 words answering the following questions: How did your participation in sports during your high school years influence you? July Deadlines

AlphaCard Scholarship Program – In this $1,000 scholarship program, high school seniors can write a 250-300 word essay responding to a question about campus safety. The topic of the essay is: What measures could schools or universities implement to improve campus safety? Application deadline is Wednesday, July 1. College Sports Scholarships – All high school seniors who have competed in a sport at the high school level are eligible to apply. The scholarship can only be applied toward the cost of tuition, books, or room and board. Explain what you learned from that moment and how it has impacted you. Application deadline is Wednesday, July 1.
